Joel Thvedt joined the firm in 2006, after years of experience with the Los Angeles offices of national law firms and after spending more than five years as an Assistant United States Attorney.   Mr. Thvedt has been handling civil litigation and criminal matters for more than 20 years in federal and state courts in the Los Angeles area and elsewhere.  In his criminal defense practice, Mr. Thvedt represents federal and state defendants charged with fraud, money laundering, narcotics, and other offenses.  He also represents targets and subjects of federal and state investigations and has conducted corporate internal investigations.  In his civil litigation practice, he handles all manner of business litigation, including employment, fraud, intellectual property and trade secret, partnership and corporate dissolution, and other civil matters



For several years after graduating from law school, Mr. Thvedt practiced civil litigation in the Los Angeles office of the New York law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy.  There he handled matters ranging from employment and civil rights cases, bankruptcy litigation and lease disputes, to high-stakes securities and financial fraud cases.

From 1994 to 2000, Mr. Thvedt was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Central District of California, in Los Angeles.  At the U.S. Attorney's Office, Mr. Thvedt handled numerous cases from investigation through indictment, trial, and appeal.  For the last several years in the Office, Mr. Thvedt was a prosecutor in the Major Fraud unit, prosecuting a wide variety of frauds, including bank, securities, financial institution, insurance, and bankruptcy fraud.  Mr. Thvedt was the Financial Institution Fraud coordinator for the District, coordinating the Office's work with agents from the FBI, the FDIC, the RTC, the Secret Service, and other federal law enforcement agencies.  In addition to prosecuting fraud cases, Mr. Thvedt investigated and prosecuted a variety of other federal crimes, including gun, narcotics, and immigration offenses, and bank robbery.  Mr. Thvedt also successfully argued numerous cases before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals

Since returning to private practice, Mr. Thvedt has worked in state and federal courts on both civil and criminal matters.  Mr. Thvedt has represented civil litigants in cases ranging from contract disputes, fraud allegations, partnership disputes, trade secret cases, employment cases, copyright cases, SEC securities fraud investigations, personal injury, toxic tort defense, and a wide variety of business disputes.  

In his criminal defense practice, Mr. Thvedt has defended individuals in both federal and state courts.  This work included defending persons being investigated for, or charged with, bank fraud, mortgage fraud, securities fraud, money laundering, racketeering, theft of trade secrets, and narcotics offenses.  On numerous occasions, Mr. Thvedt’s vigorous representation of clients under investigation has resulted in prosecutors declining to charge the clients.  Mr. Thvedt has also conducted internal investigations on matters including theft of trade secrets, embezzlement, forgery, bankruptcy, and securities fraud. 

Mr. Thvedt has been voted a Top Lawyer for the last several years by Pasadena Magazine.

Mr. Thvedt graduated with honors from the University of Chicago, and attended law school at the University of California, Los Angeles.  At UCLA, Joel was a member of Law Review and was an officer of El Centro Legal, an organization dedicated to providing legal services to the poor.

Mr. Thvedt has been an instructor on internal corporate investigations at Practicing Law Institute seminars.  Mr. Thvedt is a member of the Federal Indigent Defense Panel for the Central District of California.


Mr. Thvedt has been a Trustee or Board Member in a number of organizations dedicated to raising money for and improving education and the arts in the San Gabriel Valley area
